For what felt like too many days in a row now, I had bolted out my apartment. This morning, though, I was flat-out avoiding Owen. I was conflicted about how I should handle things with him: should I pretend like nothing happened because nothing did happen, or explore the uneasy gut feeling I had?

It wasn’t the first time I’d seen that look in his eyes. I saw it once before, the first day Liam and I worked together. I felt unsettled then, much like I did now. Something had been different about Owen the last few weeks, but then again I had been different, too.

“Good morning,” I greeted the on-duty booking clerk as I arrived to work an hour before Liam. I was relieved to be in this environment rather than at home since I was feeling a little spooked.

I headed straight for my office and pulled up the lists for the Garrison case on my work computer. I knew Liam meant it when he said he wouldn’t be in for another hour, so I decided to get to work cross-referencing the lists.

I opened our work software, uploaded the documents, and let the program do all the work. I stood up, headed to the break room, and poured myself a cup of coffee. I flounced back to the office, feeling optimistic about what the day could hold.

I played on my phone for the next forty-five minutes, until Liam came strolling into the room. I grinned up at him, unable to control the smile.

“You’re awfully chipper this morning,” he surmised.

“Good morning to you too,” I bubbled. “Want to go grab coffee with me?”

His eyes flickered to the mug sitting on my desk. “That cup is half-full, Callie. You’re going to waste perfectly good coffee?”

“Precinct coffee isn’t the best,” I admitted, my lips curling in disgust when I looked at it.

“Fine. No funny business?” His dark eyes looked exhausted, and for the first time since I’d met him, I saw bags under them.

I bit my lip and shook my head. “I got shot yesterday. Do you really think I’m in the mood for funny business?”

Liam sent his eyes skyward. “You were grazed. Your words, remember?”

“Meh, semantics. So what do you say?”

He sighed. “Sure. Coffee sounds great.” He glanced over my shoulder at my computer. “What were you working on? And how long have you been here for?”

I decided to be honest with him. “I got here an hour ago, and I’m cross-referencing all the lists to get overlapping names. It might take a while since the lists are so long.”

He shrugged. “Cool. Let’s lock up and go get coffee.” He was rather low energy, and not being his normal witty self. Maybe he just need cheering up.

I nearly jumped in elation. “Great, there’s this cute little place around the corner. They have the best scones.”

“Where did you get all this fucking energy from? Is it drugs? If so, where can I get some? The evidence locker?” He joked, locking our office door and walking with me to leave the precinct.
